Congratulations to Liz Culotti whose photo earned her two tickets to this year’s Greenbelt Harvest Picnic featuring great local food and a line-up of talented musicians led by Green Hero, Daniel Lanois.

When we told Liz about her prize she wrote: “I’m so excited to celebrate Ontario’s agriculture and hear amazing Canadian artists play music! Being a part of the Green Heroes community has taught me so much about what I can personally do to save the environment and I’m so thankful to be a part of it.”

Here is the winning photo that netted the most comments.

TVO’s premiere of Green Heroes’ second season featured Daniel Lanois and other performers at the 2012 GreenBelt Harvest Picnic. Inspired by the annual gathering of great music and wholesome local food, CineFocus Canada and the Green Heroes team are running a contest this month and giving away a pair of tickets to this year’s Greenbelt Harvest Picnic on August 31, 2013 featuring Gordon Lightfoot, Emmy Lou Harris and many more amazing musicians.

dan

The contest doesn’t require any petitioning and we most certainly are not asking you to dress up in a fancy costume parading around the streets as an environmental super hero (although this is always welcome)….

Your mission (should you decide to take it):

(1)  Join the Green Heroes Academy Facebook page via the Intro Mission at academy.greenheroes.tv, and if you already have you’re half-way there!

(2)  Enter the Food Mission: Biting into Change”. Once inside the mission select  ‘The Locavore Pledge” challenge and scroll down to find action #4 and take the required picture. Posting with the hashtag #GreenHeroesContest.

(3)  With the picture automatically posted in the Green Heroes Academy page on Facebook, share your picture-post to gain the most likes and retweets by August 26 to win two tickets to the Greenbelt Harvest Picnic on August 31st.

Blogdescription
Good luck to all you Green Hero recruits and we wish you well on your journey of greenspiration. This year’s picnic will feature musical acts such as Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Emmylou Harris, Daniel Lanois, the Arkells and many more; along with the great people that grow Ontario’s food. The Harvest Picnic is a perfect way to lead into the Harvest season.

Best of luck,

The Green Heroes Team

The Green Heroes Campaign is about finding inspirational stories about people who are making a real difference in the environment – and with our web channel and app our story pool expands exponentially to include people suggested by you!

Mary Gorman1Mary Gorman won the “nominate a Green Heroes contest” back in 2011. Mary, who co-founded the Save our Seas and Shores coalition (with Elizabeth May), was crowd-sourced as one of six finalist and then crowned our grand prize winner for her efforts preserving marine life in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. Her prize was to be profiled on our TV show and web channel. That fall Green Heroes went to her picturesque home in Nova Scotia to record her story.

As part of the trip, we met Farley Mowat at his summer home in Cape Breton. Farley shares a similar concern to Mary’s about the urgent need to protect the Gulf (whose waters touch five of Canada’s ten provinces and is home to over 2000 marine species.) We are honoured to have  him in this week’s episode, ‘Saving Oceans’.

‘Saving Oceans’ also features Cousteau granddaughters, Alexandra and Céline and retail giant and sustainable seafood pioneer, Paul Uys. With this top-notch roster of Green Heroes, we look at the future of Canadian oceans and fisheries, not only the marine life that lives in their waters, but all species (including humans) who rely on them for survival.

It’s not a doom and gloom scenario – rather it is an episode with a clear message of hope. Paul Uys, past VP at Loblaw’s story shows how community and business can take action to pioneer a program that gives consumer access to sustainable fish in Canadian supermarkets.

Céline and Alexandra Cousteau’s work as multiplatform filmmakers who travel the world to find stories that focus on the human connection to the hydrosphere emphasize how we must all co-operate in human society to achieve a livable future.

All the Green Heroes in this episode, as in the entire series, are committed to showing leadership in the complex struggle we face. We are proud to tell their stories and hope you are inspired to share them with your friends and get involved through our Academy app!

Green Heroes – Saving Oceans – airs Tuesday, July 16 at 7:30 ET on TVO and repeats Sunday, July 21 at 8:30 p.m. ET

What do innovators Will Kozma, Andreas Souvaliotis, Frank Stronach and Bob Oliver all have in common? They recognize that climate change is a rising problem and that the only way to address it is by finding ways to reduce emissions by managing our ecological footprint. How so? They mitigate the effects of climate change by introducing us to new and imaginative ways to travel!

Featured Hero Frank Stronach, founder of Magna International, has partnered with former Magna vice-president, Frank Gingl, to create BionX, a product line of bikes and recreational vehicles that use an electrical component to help peddlers bike longer distances than ever before. You can learn about this venture in our latest episode as well as Will Kozma’s successful EcoCab company, the pedal-powered taxi in Toronto that creates a “win-win” situation for both the planet and its people.

Frank Stronach - Green Hero

Also featured in this week’s episode are leaders of environmental transportation incentive programs. Andreas Souvaliotis is the founder of Green Rewards, an incentive program that became LoyaltyOne’s Air Miles for Social Change division, that encourages participants to engage in green activities.  Pollution Probe’s CEO, Bob Oliver, encourages green commuting with the annual  Clean Air Commute. Green Heroes follows employees at Toronto Hydro, Powerstream and the Ontario Power Authority as they commit to travel by any mode other than driving alone in their car – for an entire week.

Watch our latest episode “Moving Green” to learn more about our Transportation Green Heroes, airing Tuesday July 9th at 7:30PM, and Sunday July 14th at 8:30PM on TVO.

The Canadian Museum of Nature will be featuring Green Hero Edward Burtynsky’s exhibition, Oil, from May 31 until September 2, 2013. Don’t miss your chance to see this spectacular exhibit, which will include over 50 of Edward’s large-scale colour photographs depicting humanity’s impact on the natural landscape. As a source of energy, oil has had an enormous impact on our modern world. The exhibit includes images of oil fields, refineries, vehicles, and motorways that show us a side of this energy source that we do not see when we heat our homes or drive our cars.

Edward’s unique photography was also showcased in a documentary film entitled Manufactured Landscapes and he was awarded the Order of Canada in 2006.

You can learn more about Edward and his work on our “The Art of Change” episode airing Tuesday July 2nd at 7:30pm and Sunday July 7th at 8:30pm on TVO. Edward will be in good company on this episode, with fellow artist Robert Bateman, Manufactured Landscapes Director and Writer Jennifer Baichwal and artist David Buckland discussing the importance of representing nature through their artwork and how this can help change the planet.

During the episode, play along with our Green Heroes Academy app that will quiz you on our Heroes, watch cool videos, complete fun games and missions, and become a Green Hero too! You can watch videos about Edward Burtynsky and the other Art of Change Heroes, create your own activist artwork, and discover nature through the App.

Celebrate National Aboriginal Day with us today!

The Governor General of Canada proclaimed the first National Aboriginal Day on June 21, 1996. Every year, this celebration offers us a unique opportunity to learn about the rich, diverse heritage of Aboriginal peoples across our country, and celebrate the First Nations, Metis and Inuit people and all of their contributions to Canadian culture.

Not only does Canada have a history full of beautiful cultures, we are also lucky enough to have a rich and diverse natural environment across the entire country.  The Aboriginal way of life  celebrates nature and understand the deep connection we have with the environment we live in.

One of our Green Heroes, Ta’Kaiya Blaney, is a Sliammon First Nation and says this about her culture, “In my culture it’s a fact, and an understanding of life, that everything is connected, and we were put on this earth to be stewards and caretakers of the environment.”

Ta’Kaiya is only 12 years old, but has become an advocate for marine and coastal wildlife and spreads awareness through singing.  Her first song, “Shallow Waters,” was inspired by the proposed Northern Gateway oil pipeline and Ta’Kaiya’s desire to prevent future oil spills.

Share in the Celebration!

Here are just a few of the events taking place across the country:

Watch Ta’Kaiy Blaney save marine and coastal wildlife with her voice on the new Green Heroes episode, “Back to Nature,” airing on TVO this Tuesday, June 25th, at 7:30pm.

On Saturday, June 15th, Environmental Defence held a gathering of all that is green beauty and healthy living. From making your own facial scrubs, learning about innovative new products, and even getting a full makeover, the Just Beautiful Eco-Beauty Market event was truly a success for green heroes everywhere.

While at the market, customers were given the Environmental Defence Personal Care Products Pocket Shopping Guidepocket guidea great way to easily identify the Toxic Ten in your products with a pocket-sized card. The vendors also offered amazing samples of their products while also explaining a bit about the importance of their companies and living green.

Graydon Moffat, creator of GRAYDON – Clinical Luxury by Nature, told us a bit about her “green cream”, which contains oils from broccoli seeds, saying: “Broccoli is my Green Hero”. Graydon is innovator with a wonderful cream and even better product line that meets specifications or requirements of beauty products because all of the info is readily available on her website

Next up, we met Ella Nunes – creator of Ella’s Botanicals, as well as Evan Healy of the evanhealy brand of skin and body care products. There were so many wonderful companies abiding by the Just Beautiful Pledge, including YOGA-TTA, a cool yoga mat spray, The Basic Elements, a new local company with vegan and organic skincare products, and Good Roots, an Toronto-based social enterprise that doesn’t charge tax for feminine care products! The team from eaurganic were another group of innovators in attendance at the Market that include vegan-friendly and gluten-free products.

A detailed list of all the vendors is available on the Environmental Defence website:

On Monday, April 22, 2013 at 7pm and 7:30pm, Green Heroes™ will premiere the new, exciting, and enticing second season on TVO. Produced by CineFocus Canada in association with TVO, the 6 x 30 minute series tells remarkable stories of people who acted on their ideas and heroically “ventured forth” to protect our planet. From the celebrity to the everyday person, each story details the different paths and interests the Green Heroes have taken in their quests to help save the world. Season 2 launches with special back-to-back episodes, “Biting into Change” and “Green is the New Black”, featuring Chef Jamie Kennedy, Daniel Lanois, Adria Vasil, and many more amazing Heroes who are saving the planet.

Now you can help save the world and become a Green Hero too by downloading the new Green Heroes™ Academy App (http://academy.greenheroes.tv) with different missions and actions relating to each of the upcoming episodes.

At 7pm, “Biting into Change” looks at how food is at the core of our life, but changing how we produce and consume food is at the centre of a sustainable life. That is why these Green Heroes are finding planet-saving at the end of a fork with celebrity chef Jamie Kennedy and renowned musician and producer, Daniel Lanois, at the forefront of it all.  Jamie is one of Canada’s most celebrated chefs, and his passion for locally grown food has shaped the evolution of Canadian cuisine, one dish at a time. Collaborating with musicians and chefs to create FoodStock, a culinary event that drew 30,000 supporters to stop the mega-quarry of Southern Ontario farmland, Jamie is definitely one Hero to watch. Daniel is another Hero who made an impact by stepping out of the recording studio, after producing career-changing records for Bob Dylan, U2 and Emmylou Harris, and became a food advocate supporting Ontario farmers. In August 2011, he hosted and and helped organized the Harvest Festival Picnic in Hamilton, a celebration of local food and music with a line-up of stellar musical acts including the Tragically Hip and Sarah Harmer.

Then at 7:30pm, “Green is the New Black” observes that, for the planet, fashion and beauty items costs more than the price tag and that is why these Green Heroes are making it hip to go green. Adria Vasil is known for her informative Ecoholic books and column in NOW Magazine, offering incites on how to better treat our homes and bodies. Another Hero helping to green the beauty industry is Donna Bishop, a former makeup artist/hair stylist who has been a been a beauty and fashion insider for over 10 years. She created Green Beauty, a curated online beauty boutique and full-service spa in Toronto on her mantra that there is no need to compromise quality and effectiveness of makeup and other beauty products in order to be conscientious. “Green is the New Black” fittingly features eco-fashionista Kelly Drennan, founder Fashion Takes Action, the one and only organization in Canada that is re-sizing fashion’s footprint from the inside out. Over the years, Kelly witnessed, first hand, the enormous impacts of fashion, from energy, waste, chemicals and human rights abuses. Instead of being part of the problem, she decided to be part of the solution and today her organization is transforming the clothes we wear to make them more affordable and sustainable.

Be sure to tune in on EARTH DAY, April 22nd, at 7pm for our 1 hour, back-to-back Season 2 premiere on TVO. Full episodes and webisodes of all the featured Green Heroes will also be available on the Green Heroes™ website: http://www.greenheroes.tv/
