Green Hero Laura Reinsborough is the founder of Not Far From the Tree, an award-winning organization that encourages picking urban fruit to share with local food banks and their volunteer harvesters.

Brewers Plate Toronto is an exciting event happening on Wednesday, April 17th, 2013, at the Barbara Frum CBC Atrium, with all of the proceeds going towards Laura’s extraordinary charity.

This event is a decadent evening of Ontario’s local craft brewers paired with gourmet cuisine. In addition to the great live music and entertainment, there is also the chance to meet some of the finest brewers and chefs (Green Hero Jamie Kennedy attended last year!)

Some celebrated chefs this year include Lora Kirk, Brad Long, Michael Smith, and many more creating savory dishes. The Ontario Craft Brewers in attendance will be Steam Whistle, Amsterdam, Mill St., and many others to wet your whistle.

Be sure to purchase tickets to this great event and support an even better organization with our Green Hero, Laura Reinsborough, and her Not Far From the Tree team.

Just like our Green Hero Vandana Shiva, we all want to do our part and eat as local as possible. When you are eating at a restaurant and want to try your best to support locally grown food, try checking off the following list to keep your food within Ontario:

1. Check the menu to see if there is an Ontario-grown symbol beside some menu items or if the farms are listed beside different items

2. Ask the server where certain products are from, such as the meat or vegetables

3. Check for any specials that are local, which is a new trend in many restaurants these days

4. Some restaurants may also list that their food is Certified Local Sustainable: http://www.localfoodplus.ca/

5. Search the Savor Ontario site for a listing of restaurants serving locally grown food: http://www.foodland.gov.on.ca/savour/en/index.html

Happy eating, from your Green Heroes™ team!

In Season 1 of Green Heroes™ TV, we brought you some of the most influential and remarkable individuals like Rob Stewart. Now we have a delicious treat coming your way in April when we launch our Second Season of Green Heroes™ TV, with an episode featuring renowned Chef Jamie Kennedy!

While shooting our episode with Jamie, we encountered the beautiful Ravine Vineyard located in St. Davids in the Niagara region. In addition to the stunning landscape and wonderful scenery, their website also boasts that “in a gesture of respect for the land and the family (who owned the property), and to keep it free from imminent urban development, we built the Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery”. Now that’s something we can get on board with!

Be sure to check out their upcoming First Annual Vintage Vault Tasting, with house made charcuterie while spinning vintage vinyl records (how cool!) http://ravinevineyard.com/?p=1890 And stay tuned for Jamie’s upcoming episode on TVO!

When he came out with the documentary SharkwaterRob Stewart turned heads and drew some much-needed attention on the importance of sharks in our ecosystem and the unjust treatment they were/are receiving. With such a revolutionary film, no one can be surprised by his next feat with the new documentary, Revolution.  As a follow-up to the previous doc, Rob takes us through over 15 countries and reveals the truth about what is happening to the earth and how all of our actions are interconnected. After travelling the world, Rob encounters many special individuals that create hope and encouragement for all of the changes that we can make to help alter the harmful route we may be headed. Set for release on April 12th, even the trailer of this film (released February 25th) will give you goosebumps, inspiration, and motivation to help save our planet…and Rob tells us just where to start.

We are all aware of the effect that trains, planes, and automobiles have on our climate, but what about the carbon footprint of animal agriculture? The United Nations found that 40% more greenhouse gas emissions come from industrial livestock than from all the world’s cars, planes, ships, and trains combined.  Green Hero Leilani Münter is revving up her engine to spread awareness about eating more plant-based diets and how it can greatly impact our planet. Many reports show that if you eat even one less burger a week, it is the equivalent to taking a car off the road for over 500 km!

NDP leader Jack Layton was a leader in environmental change. He co-founded the Toronto Atmospheric Fund, a program that finds solutions for air quality problems in the city. It has saved $55 million in energy costs and reduced Toronto’s emissions.  Jack applied his passion for the environment to his personal life too. He and his wife Olivia Chow retrofitted their home with technology like solar electricity and window insulation. Read more…

Know another Oil Changer who would make a Great GreenHero?

After seeing An Inconvenient Truth, Leilani was so moved by the film’s message that she posted to her blog that she had seen the movie. That note got posted on a NASCAR forum and created a storm of letters and discussion. Though most comments were negative, she realized she had managed to get the racing sector talking about climate change. With that, she was on her way.

Like Leilani, are you, or someone you know, working in a particularly polluting industry, yet are determined to do something to offset or lessen your impact on the environment?

Leilani’s desire to spread the word has always been strong:

“I felt a responsibility to do something about the impact I have on the environment because of my racing career. If I can get one person to think twice about their impact on the earth and start recycling and conserving energy, then it’s working.”

Sound like something you or your buddy might say? Then enter our contest for a chance to win a GreenHeroes prize and be featured on our contest website. You may even end up having your story told on TVO!

Check out last year’s winner: Mary Gorman! Winners this year will be announced at the Green Living Show, in April 2012.

You can watch Leilani’s own GreenHero profile video to learn more about her inspiring work and how she’s changing her life to reduce her carbon footprint.

To learn how you can reduce your carbon footprint and change the way you live, visit our Oil Changers campaign page. Don’t forget to leave a comment!
