Heroes combat adversity with ingenuity, bravery and strength. Al Gore truly exemplifies these heroic attributes.

For over a decade, the former American Vice President has fought climate change, the greatest challenge of our time. In 2006, his Academy Award winning film An Inconvenient Truth, raised awareness about the need to phase out fossil fuels and shift to clean renewable energy.  Now eleven years later comes An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power.

In devastating detail, the sequel lays out the ongoing destruction of warming temperatures, rising seas and increasingly deadly storms. We also get to see Al Gore behind the scenes at international climate summits brokering complex deals to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. (I guess you could call this heroic diplomacy.) But what most inspired me was the focus on the power of ordinary individuals following in Gore’s footsteps promoting renewable energy solutions. The Climate Reality Leadership Corp  Al Gore created after his first film now numbers 12,000 and leads the way in the global movement for climate action. (Three members of the Green Heroes creative crew are part of this team.)

An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power is definitely worth seeing. Afterwards, you might consider the path for your own hero’s journey combating climate change. The film certainly reaffirmed my commitment to Green Heroes and the people we’ve profiled, for instance: race car driver Leilani Munter , who after seeing Al Gore’s first film, launched a campaign to reduce fossil fuel in her sport, or fashionista Kelly Drennan who raises awareness about the environmental impact of the clothes we wear.

Ingenuity, bravery and strength. In the face of climate change, these heroic actions provide hope, a much better choice than despair.

Green Hero Kelly Drennan is really making an impact on in the fashion industry from the inside out. With the creation of Fashion Takes Action, an organization focusing on ethical, sustainable clothing and accessories, and developing the annual Connect Beauty event with WHEN (Women’s Healthy Environments Network), it’s hard to imagine that this Green Hero can help the environment any more than she already has. Well, Kelly proved us wrong yet again and has now helped FTA contribute to the One Million Acts of Green campaign, developed by fellow Green Hero Willa Black to help others partake in positive environmental acts in a record amount of time. FTA and Kelly use their One Million Acts of Green page to help resize your fashion footprint, creating awareness of how we can help save the planet through our fashion and how we take care of our clothing. From simple acts of hanging your clothes to dry to attending a clothing swap, Kelly and FTA have developed great ways you can take action through your fashion.

Our newest Green Hero, Kelly Drennan, is an eco-fashionista on a mission: to create awareness about supporting ethical, sustainable fashion. As the founder of Fashion Takes Action, a premier non-profit organization focused on ensuring sustainability in every item of clothing, shoes, and accessories, Kelly has a new and exciting event coming up this week to help save the planet.

In its 3 season, FTA and WHEN (Women’s Healthy Environments Network) team up for Connect Beauty, a lively event that features high-profile environmental leaders modelling eco-fashion trends! On Wednesday, May 22nd, eco-leaders and eco-preneurs will gather for great raffle prizes, auctions on clothing seen right on the runway, local food and drinks, and a chance to purchase ethical products from a variety of businesses.

You can buy tickets to the annual event and support the demand for ethical, sustainable fashion. Live Green cardholders receive a special discount on tickets to the event as well!

Connect Beauty takes place on Wednesday, May 22nd, at Revival Bar – 7pm

Do you enjoy shopping for designer or brand name clothing, but also want to make eco-friendly shopping choices?

If you’re in Toronto next week, you can do both at Shop Sustainable: An Eco Friendly Marketplace and Clothing Swap!

The event will be hosted by Fashion Takes Action, an organization that educates consumers and the fashion industry about sustainable fashion — a phrase that may seem paradoxical given the many environmental issues involved in the creation and disposal of clothing.

Shop Sustainable will take place on November 29, 2011 from 5 pm to 9 pm. Visit the Fashion Takes Action website for details.
