Saving the Planet One Story at a Time

Premiering Sunday April 13 on CBS’ Showtime is the investigative series Years of Living Dangerously. In it, Ford and other Hollywood celebrities and respected journalists span the globe to expose the dangers resulting from years of living without serious regard for our planet.  Green Heroes applauds CBS’s Showtime for airing the series in a key program slot on Sundays at 10 p.m. Green Heroes airs Sundays on TVO featuring stories of celebrity and everyday people  taking on climate change.

The first episode of “Years of Living Dangerously” features Harrison Ford as he travels to Indonesia; there he witnesses the deforestation of the country’s once plentiful jungles to support the palm oil industry. Even elephants living in state parks are at risk. Poisoned to make way for the replanting of trees, these elephants are just one of many species facing extinction.

The two other investigations done by NY Times Journalist Thomas Friedman and Academy Award nominee Don Cheadle show the direct result of increased carbon emissions on our planet’s temperature and make the connection between droughts and social-political conditions – such as civil unrest in Syria and unemployment in the bible belt of America. In both cases, people are forced to move from their homes to the city, only to face under-paid, overcrowded, and stressful living conditions.

As a warm-up to a night of climate change enlightenment, tune into TVO as Green Heroes’ second season airs with two back-to-back episodes beginning at 6:00 p.m. Biting into Change features celebrity chef Jamie Kennedy and legendary music producer Daniel Lanois. Green is the New Black tracks three fashionistas as they take on the mega beauty biz.

At the Green Heroes Academy embark on a personal journey to make a difference with a mobile app filled with fun, family focused activities. Go the extra mile with challenges like the Transport Mission and make a difference– one green act at a time.

On June 11th, Green Heroes™ will kick off Season 2 with our full season line-up to come throughout the months of June and July, starting with “Biting into Change” at 7:30pm on TVO.

“Biting into Change” looks at how food is at the core of our life, but changing how we produce and consume food is at the centre of a sustainable life. That is why these Green Heroes are finding planet-saving at the end of a fork with celebrity chef Jamie Kennedy and renowned musician and producer, Daniel Lanois, at the forefront of it all.  Jamie is one of Canada’s most celebrated chefs, and his passion for locally grown food has shaped the evolution of Canadian cuisine, one dish at a time. Collaborating with musicians and chefs to create FoodStock, a culinary event that drew 30,000 supporters to stop the mega-quarry of Southern Ontario farmland, Jamie is definitely one Hero to watch.

Daniel is another Hero who made an impact by stepping out of the recording studio, after producing career-changing records for Bob Dylan, U2 and Emmylou Harris, and became a food advocate supporting Ontario farmers. In August 2011, he hosted and helped organized the Harvest Festival Picnic in Hamilton, a celebration of local food and music with a line-up of stellar musical acts including the Tragically Hip and Sarah Harmer. This summer, the Greenbelt Harvest picnic will be featuring the one and only Neil Young and Crazy Horse – a sure-fire way to spread the word about supporting local while having a great time!

On Monday, April 22, 2013 at 7pm and 7:30pm, Green Heroes™ will premiere the new, exciting, and enticing second season on TVO. Produced by CineFocus Canada in association with TVO, the 6 x 30 minute series tells remarkable stories of people who acted on their ideas and heroically “ventured forth” to protect our planet. Now you can help save the world and become a Green Hero too by downloading the new Green Heroes™ Academy App (http://academy.greenheroes.tv) with different missions and actions relating to each of the upcoming episodes.

At 7pm, “Biting into Change” looks at how food is at the core of our life, but changing how we produce and consume food is at the centre of a sustainable life. In August 2011, he hosted and and helped organized the Harvest Festival Picnic in Hamilton, a celebration of local food and music with a line-up of stellar musical acts including the Tragically Hip and Sarah Harmer.

Then at 7:30pm, “Green is the New Black” observes that, for the planet, fashion and beauty items costs more than the price tag and that is why these Green Heroes are making it hip to go green. Adria Vasil is known for her informative Ecoholic books and column in NOW Magazine, offering incites on how to better treat our homes and bodies. Another Hero helping to green the beauty industry is Donna Bishop, a former makeup artist/hair stylist who has been a been a beauty and fashion insider for over 10 years. She created Green Beauty, a curated online beauty boutique and full-service spa in Toronto on her mantra that there is no need to compromise quality and effectiveness of makeup and other beauty products in order to be conscientious. “Green is the New Black” fittingly features eco-fashionista Kelly Drennan, founder Fashion Takes Action, the one and only organization in Canada that is re-sizing fashion’s footprint from the inside out. Over the years, Kelly witnessed, first hand, the enormous impacts of fashion, from energy, waste, chemicals and human rights abuses. Instead of being part of the problem, she decided to be part of the solution and today her organization is transforming the clothes we wear to make them more affordable and sustainable.

Be sure to tune in on EARTH DAY, April 22nd, at 7pm for our 1 hour, back-to-back Season 2 premiere on TVO. Full episodes and webisodes of all the featured Green Heroes will also be available on the Green Heroes™ website: http://www.greenheroes.tv/

Green Hero Laura Reinsborough is the founder of Not Far From the Tree, an award-winning organization that encourages picking urban fruit to share with local food banks and their volunteer harvesters.

Brewers Plate Toronto is an exciting event happening on Wednesday, April 17th, 2013, at the Barbara Frum CBC Atrium, with all of the proceeds going towards Laura’s extraordinary charity.

This event is a decadent evening of Ontario’s local craft brewers paired with gourmet cuisine. In addition to the great live music and entertainment, there is also the chance to meet some of the finest brewers and chefs (Green Hero Jamie Kennedy attended last year!)

Some celebrated chefs this year include Lora Kirk, Brad Long, Michael Smith, and many more creating savory dishes. The Ontario Craft Brewers in attendance will be Steam Whistle, Amsterdam, Mill St., and many others to wet your whistle.

Be sure to purchase tickets to this great event and support an even better organization with our Green Hero, Laura Reinsborough, and her Not Far From the Tree team.
