About 'Cardinal and Wild Apples'?

In the Robert Bateman picture “Cardinal and Wild Apples” there are spots on the surface of the apples that are natural blemishes which are not unhealthy. These are the telltale signs that pesticides were NOT sprayed on them in their cultivation.  This painting was inspired by the following lyric:

“Hey farmer, farmer put away that DDT now, Give me spots on my apples but leave me the birds and the bees (please!)”

This famous song “The Big Yellow Taxi”,  by Joni Mitchell, is one of the most inspired environmental anthems ever created. One story about this song is when Mitchell was visiting Buffy Sainte Marie in Hawaii where, in a nearby settlement, a forest was being cut down to create a parking lot.

The well known verse, “Don’t it always seem to go, that you don’t know what you’ve got til it’s gone, they paved paradise and put up a parking lot”, is known my millions.
