On Monday, April 22, 2013 at 7pm and 7:30pm, Green Heroes™ will premiere the new, exciting, and enticing second season on TVO. Produced by CineFocus Canada in association with TVO, the 6 x 30 minute series tells remarkable stories of people who acted on their ideas and heroically “ventured forth” to protect our planet. From the celebrity to the everyday person, each story details the different paths and interests the Green Heroes have taken in their quests to help save the world. Season 2 launches with special back-to-back episodes, “Biting into Change” and “Green is the New Black”, featuring Chef Jamie Kennedy, Daniel Lanois, Adria Vasil, and many more amazing Heroes who are saving the planet.

Now you can help save the world and become a Green Hero too by downloading the new Green Heroes™ Academy App (http://academy.greenheroes.tv) with different missions and actions relating to each of the upcoming episodes.

At 7pm, “Biting into Change” looks at how food is at the core of our life, but changing how we produce and consume food is at the centre of a sustainable life. That is why these Green Heroes are finding planet-saving at the end of a fork with celebrity chef Jamie Kennedy and renowned musician and producer, Daniel Lanois, at the forefront of it all.  Jamie is one of Canada’s most celebrated chefs, and his passion for locally grown food has shaped the evolution of Canadian cuisine, one dish at a time. Collaborating with musicians and chefs to create FoodStock, a culinary event that drew 30,000 supporters to stop the mega-quarry of Southern Ontario farmland, Jamie is definitely one Hero to watch. Daniel is another Hero who made an impact by stepping out of the recording studio, after producing career-changing records for Bob Dylan, U2 and Emmylou Harris, and became a food advocate supporting Ontario farmers. In August 2011, he hosted and and helped organized the Harvest Festival Picnic in Hamilton, a celebration of local food and music with a line-up of stellar musical acts including the Tragically Hip and Sarah Harmer.

Then at 7:30pm, “Green is the New Black” observes that, for the planet, fashion and beauty items costs more than the price tag and that is why these Green Heroes are making it hip to go green. Adria Vasil is known for her informative Ecoholic books and column in NOW Magazine, offering incites on how to better treat our homes and bodies. Another Hero helping to green the beauty industry is Donna Bishop, a former makeup artist/hair stylist who has been a been a beauty and fashion insider for over 10 years. She created Green Beauty, a curated online beauty boutique and full-service spa in Toronto on her mantra that there is no need to compromise quality and effectiveness of makeup and other beauty products in order to be conscientious. “Green is the New Black” fittingly features eco-fashionista Kelly Drennan, founder Fashion Takes Action, the one and only organization in Canada that is re-sizing fashion’s footprint from the inside out. Over the years, Kelly witnessed, first hand, the enormous impacts of fashion, from energy, waste, chemicals and human rights abuses. Instead of being part of the problem, she decided to be part of the solution and today her organization is transforming the clothes we wear to make them more affordable and sustainable.

Be sure to tune in on EARTH DAY, April 22nd, at 7pm for our 1 hour, back-to-back Season 2 premiere on TVO. Full episodes and webisodes of all the featured Green Heroes will also be available on the Green Heroes™ website: https://www.greenheroes.tv/

It’s becoming more and more evident that our food and the way we eat directly effects the environment. Green Heroes Vandana Shiva and Leilani Munter have both contributed to the cause, creating different campaigns to encourage others to eat green and support sustainable eating habits. With Meatless March trending all over the social sphere, we wanted to give you some great tips on trying out the month-long project or even committing to Meatless Mondays. Meatless March sets the goal of taking on a local, vegetarian diet for the full month. Not only is this an experiment to try and eat like a vegetarian, this is also a means of helping our environment. Did you know that the United Nations found that 40% more greenhouse gas emissions come from industrial livestock than from all of the world’s cars, planes, ships, and trains combined? So we challenge you to participate in Meatless March for one day, one week, or even the whole month!

Here are some great tips and guidelines on becoming a vegetarian, and why it’s so important, from our friends at WWF Canada: http://community.wwf.ca/ActionDetail.cfm?ActionId=60

And here are some yummy recipe ideas from our pals at Green Living to make the vegetarian diet a little bit more “flavorful”: http://www.greenlivingonline.com/article/hearty-and-vegetarian-comfort-food

As our Green Hero Vandana says, “The funny thing is you can eat your way to conservation”.

Happy eating!

In Season 1 of Green Heroes™ TV, we brought you some of the most influential and remarkable individuals like Rob Stewart. Now we have a delicious treat coming your way in April when we launch our Second Season of Green Heroes™ TV, with an episode featuring renowned Chef Jamie Kennedy!

While shooting our episode with Jamie, we encountered the beautiful Ravine Vineyard located in St. Davids in the Niagara region. In addition to the stunning landscape and wonderful scenery, their website also boasts that “in a gesture of respect for the land and the family (who owned the property), and to keep it free from imminent urban development, we built the Ravine Vineyard Estate Winery”. Now that’s something we can get on board with!

Be sure to check out their upcoming First Annual Vintage Vault Tasting, with house made charcuterie while spinning vintage vinyl records (how cool!) http://ravinevineyard.com/?p=1890 And stay tuned for Jamie’s upcoming episode on TVO!

Last night GreenHeroes producers Joan Prowse and John Bessai attended the Excellence in Corporate Social Responsibility Awards ceremony.

Hosted by Greenliving Enterprises, a company that markets green programs, products and services and is a partner of GreenHeroes, the Awards honours leaders in corporate social responsibility — an initiative businesses often take to use their influence and power for social and often environmental good.

This year the Outstanding Achievement Award was added to the awards roster and given posthumously to Ray Anderson, former founder and chairman of carpet manufacturer Interface Inc. and pioneer in corporate sustainability.

We featured Ray in a GreenHeroes video last year. Watch it to learn more about his work.

Ray’s daughter was present at the event. She accepted the award on his behalf and read a touching poem called “Tomorrow’s Child.”

John and Joan were fortunate to be seated at the same table as two of the events’ award winners: Jennifer Williams, CEO of La Siembra Co-Operative, a company that offers free-trade and organic products who won a Small Business Award and the volunteer environmental team from Steam Whistle Brewing who won a Medium Business Award for Steamwhistle’s green manufacturing process.

Another of one of our GreenHeroes was honoured last night. Tom Heintzman, Co-Founder and President of Bullfrog Power, a Canadian provider of 100% green energy, won a Medium Business Award for his leadership in greening the energy marketplace in Canada.

Watch our video to learn more about Tom’s work.

For a full listing of last night’s winners and information on their work, check out the GreenLiving website.
Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to GreenLiving for a great night!

GreenHeroes is very proud that our video featuring Ric O’Barry’s journey from dolphin trainer to dolphin activist was screened at Planet in Focus on the environmental film festival’s closing night.

GreenHeroes producer Joan Prowse and Stephanie Silliker were delighted to see Ric O’Barry again. The trio first met at the Toronto premiere of The Cove, in the summer of 2009. Seeing a great story, Joan and Stephanie asked Ric if they could share it on GreenHeroes. That fall, Joan travelled to interview him at his home in Miami just as the Oscar buzz began. The Cove went on to win the Academy award for best documentary in 2010.

In his acceptance speech this past Sunday at Planet in Focus, Ric told the audience that he cannot protect dolphins from slaughter and captivity on his own. It requires heroic people who have protested the annual dolphin slaughter alongside him in Tajii Japan and other countries around the world.
Ric asked the audience to stop buying tickets to dolphin shows at Marineland as a simple way to help end dolphin captures. Want to help Ric’s cause in other ways? GreenHeroes will help you get started.
Planet in Focus gave out other awards on closing night to honour the best of the films featured at the festival. Read the Planet in Focus news release to learn more.

Planet in Focus, an environmental film festival, has announced that it will give our GreenHero Ric O’Barry the festival’s 2011 International Eco Hero award for his 40 years of activism for dolphins. Ric will be present at the festival on closing night to accept this award.

The GreenHeroes video short, produced by CineFocus Canada, will introduce Ric to the audience at the gala event.

Planet in Focus is in its 12th year and will take place in Toronto from October 12-16, 2011.

Read our newsletter to learn more about a recent press conference to announce the line-up of this year’s festival and the 2011 International and Canadian Eco Hero award winners.

It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of one of our GreenHeroes. Ray Anderson was the founder and chairman of carpet manufacturer Interface Inc. Ray passed away on August 8 after an epic struggle with cancer.

Ray  was a hero, as he encompassed the true spirit of entrepreneurship and left behind an innovative green business model. He used the metaphor of climbing a mountain to identify and explain what he called the Seven Fronts of Mount Sustainability, efforts companies must make to become sustainable:

  • Front 1 – Eliminate Waste
  • Front 2 – Eliminate Harmful Emissions
  • Front 3 – Increase Energy Efficiency and use Renewable Energy      Resources
  • Front 4 – Reduce Finite Raw Material Inputs and use recycled materials
  • Front 5 – Reduce Transportation’s Carbon Footprint
  • Front 6 – Sensitize Stakeholders
  • Front 7 – Redesign Commerce

Ray  saw that a profit could still be made by placing a heavy emphasis on recycling, ensuring that the company was working towards reducing their ecological footprint while also boosting their reputation and sales. Ray was a conundrum: he was both a successful capitalist as well as an active GreenHero — a Green Capitalist! He sought to drastically shift his company’s practice of operating primarily to the goal of achieving profit to becoming completely sustainable.

GreenHeroes has released several posts related to his great work and will be featuring them in the blog over the next two weeks.

Director and producer of GreenHeroes, Joan Prowse, has just been made a board member of Planet in Focus, Canada’s leading international environmental film and video festival. To find out more, check out our online newsletter. Congratulations Joan!

On March 31st, GreenHeroes producer/director  Joan Prowse was on stage at Revival to launch the GreenHeroes’ channel on  Mediazoic’s new Internet radio network. Here is the GreenHereos radio channel, take a listen to our very own GreenHero musicians and hear to great music by Ed Hanley, Chris BirkettJamie SparksDonna Britton and Ado. Soon to come will be Buffy Sainte-Marie and Lesley Pike!

Chris Birkett played at the event and was accompanied on the electric guitar by Dan Ross on a couple of melodies.  Chris was then joined by  Ed Hanley to play Birkett’s new song Wake Up: A Call to Action. Though the duets were completely improvised, the expert mélange of acoustic, electric guitars and tabla was fantastic.
