Saving the Planet One Story at a Time

We at GreenHeroes are gearing up for a fabulous Canadian Thanksgiving. As we head out to procure our wares for the perfect dinner, we are aware that Simple Changes Matter.

The choices we make when putting together our Thanksgiving celebrations have a huge collective impact on the planet. In the spirit of sustainability, we’d like to share our top three tips for a more sustainable Canadian Thanksgiving.

1. Buy Local

As GreenHero Laura Reinsborough reminds us, there is so much bounty around us. Canadian Thanksgiving is well timed to coincide with the beautiful harvest foods available at local farmers’ markets and in many supermarkets. Imagine topping off your Thanksgiving meal with an apple pie made from apples gleaned from trees in your community!

2. Skip Turkey

GreenHero Leilani Munter, a staunch vegetarian, would agree – just go turkey free! According to Sarah Newman at Take Part:

“Skip turkey. I know it’s bold of me to write this, but I’ve enjoyed turkey-free Thanksgivings for nearly 25 years and the meals are always delicious. Factory farming is inhumane to animals and an extremely dangerous workplace for its workers. You will also greatly reduce your carbon footprint by skipping meat. The livestock sector accounts for an astounding 1/5 of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions.”

If you just can’t imagine your Thanksgiving without turkey, we at GreenHeroes encourage you to consider opting for a humanely-raised turkey.

3. Drink Tap Water

As we learned from GreenHero Gord Downie and our Water Protector campaign, bottled water is unsustainable. Imagine how much waste you’ll keep out of landfills just by serving tap water at the Thanksgiving dinner table. Chill tap water in a glass pitcher in the ‘fridge, then add some fresh rosemary sprigs and lemon slices to give it a celebratory twist!

Simple Changes Matter, and they especially matter when folks around the world do them at the same time!

We at GreenHeroes are very inspired by 350.org’s Global Work Party to celebrate climate solutions. The upcoming day of action is on 10/10/10 – just in time for our Canadian Thanksgiving!

What better way to bring your family together and give thanks than to join in one of the hundreds of work parties happening right here in Canada.

You can even form your own work party, get it listed on the 350.org website, send in pictures of your party and they will add it to their interactive online album.

What is 350.org all about? Scientists say that 350 parts per million of CO2 in the atmosphere is the safe limit for humanity. We’re currently at 390 parts per million.

Now, we might not be mathematicians, but that seems like a problem to us. So, what can you do? Get involved! As of right now, there are 6,077 events listed in more than 184 countries around the world.

GreenHero Sarah Harmer and her organization PERL have an action you can take right now to help save the Niagara Escarpment and its wealth of biodiversity. Just sign the petition, and ask your family and friends to join you. It only takes a minute, but again, Simple Changes Matter.

Watch the video below to learn more about 350.org.

Green Your Commute
05Oct
2010

For many people, a commute is a simple way to make a green change.

Some people opt to car pool or work from home. Others start cycling, walking and taking public transit.

Here is Natasha Eloi, an on-air personality at SPACE, telling us about her transportation epiphany.

What’s your favorite way to green your commute? Take our poll and tell us why your commute lessens your impact on the environment in the comments below.

Green Snaps
03Oct
2010

Calling all budding green photographers! Here’s your chance to get your photos displayed on GreenHeroes.tv’s blog.

This week’s winner is Elizabeth Syrell of upstate New York. Elizabeth lives in a community that does not have a green bin program. Intending to reduce waste and nourish her garden, Elizabeth installed a compost system in her backyard that she fills with kitchen scraps and leaves.

This is a great idea for anyone who would like to make a simple change to his or her daily routine to help reduce waste.

The theme of our next call for photos is “In My Backyard” – so get out there and take some pictures of things happening around you – maybe a new environmental initiative in your neighborhood, a green event in your community, or even a beautiful photo of some thing unique in nature that you found while just spending time in your own surroundings. Get artistic, get creative and get green!

Simple Changes Matter to your pocketbook as well!

Stuart Hickox and the team at One Change remind us that there are easy shifts we can make in our lives and in our homes to not only save energy, water and fuel, but these shifts can save us some of our hard-earned money.

We at GreenHeroes work diligently in our own lives and homes to conserve. Here are our five favourite tips from One Change to conserve, conserve, conserve – because, Simple Changes DO Matter.

Get the junk out of your trunk!

Remove unnecessary excess weight from your car, like sports equipment or a roof rack not in use, and you could save up to $50 in fuel per year.

Air dry your laundry

Did you know that your clothes dryer is the second biggest electricity-using appliance in your home (after the refrigerator)? Why not air dry your cloths on a clothesline or drying rack to save as much as $100 on your electricity bill each year?

Stay cool with a ceiling fan

(Incredibly relevant, as many of us just experienced one of the hottest summers on record!)

Instead of A/C, consider installing an ENERGY STAR-qualified ceiling fan, which can cost as little as 10 cents a month in energy. You can even save money in the winter.

Reverse the direction of your ceiling fan motor so that cool air is pushed up towards the ceiling, drawing warm air down into the room.

Rather than cold floors and warm ceilings, you’ll have a more even temperature throughout the room. Now, can your air conditioner do that?

Fill up [your car with fuel] at least 3 days before a holiday

(With Canadian Thanksgiving just around the corner, this tip is very timely!)

To avoid the price bump!

Install a low-flow shower head.

A typical shower can use up to 25 gallons of water. A low-flow shower head can cut that by 50-70%. (And why not increase that efficiency by showering with a friend?)

A few years ago, Stuart Hickox came across a statistic on the Internet that made him realize that if everyone made a small change, the aggregate effect would be very large and for the better:

“If every American home replaced just one light with a light that’s earned the ENERGY STAR, we would save enough energy to light 3 million homes for a year, save about $600 million in annual energy costs, and prevent 9 billion pounds of greenhouse gas emissions per year, equivalent to those from about 800,000 cars.”

EnergyStar.gov

He shared this statistic with friends and family, and asked them a question:

“How hard can it be to get everyone to change one light bulb?”

This question became a call to action and One Change was formed. Learn more about them and Stuart’s efforts by reading our blog post from yesterday.

Did you act on an epiphany like Stuart did? Are you making simple changes in your life and showing others how to take those same steps too?

We want to hear about your moment of inspiration: enter our contest, or nominate a friend, for a chance to win a GreenHeroes prize and be featured on our contest website. You may even end up having your story told on TVO!

Imagine a world in which we all make one simple change. If every one of us changed one single light bulb from an incandescent bulb to a compact fluorescent (CFL), the reduction in pollution from power generation would be like taking 800,000 cars off the road.

If every one of us checked the tire pressure on our cars, Canadian drivers could save enough fuel to fill 257 Olympic-size swimming pools.

If every one of us switched to low-flow showerheads, we could each cut water use in showers by 50-70%. The staggering light bulb statistic was the light bulb moment for former marketing executive, Stuart Hickox, who began to consider the impact of millions of people being empowered to make one simple change.

Stuart soon shared the stats with friends and wrote a business plan for an innovative door-to-door, community-based social marketing campaign called One Change.

Within its first year, One Change had touched 250,000 homes, distributing free CFL bulbs and spreading their call to action: Simple Actions Matter. The organization doesn’t stop with light bulbs though.

Rather the idea that a simple action, delivered by a neighbour or friend will lead to other changes, encompasses a diversity of campaigns, including Project Porchlight and the fuel efficiency initiative. The concept is simple: don’t just talk the talk – walk the walk. Moving from awareness to action, we can all make one simple change, and give others the tools to do the same.

“What started as a campaign to just get people to change light bulbs one at a time has really turned into a way to stimulate and nurture real grassroots collaboration and change.”

– Stuart Hickox
